HOME DETAILS

Sunday evening – just got back from an early dinner and I realize I left the house without my keys – that wouldn’t be a first. Ring the doorbell but there’s no one home – not much to do for the next hour or so. Getting back to my car, I turn on the radio and start analyzing the neighbors’ houses and the people passing down the street, just to kill my time. The lights are on at Mrs. Pollock – she renovated last month so my beyond-curious nature pushes me to take a glance inside. From where I am, I can take a tour of the whole downstairs area without having to eat one of her flavorless apple pies. Still, my eyes distinguish best what’s inside the room on the corner the building, the lounge area.

Calling it unique is definitely misleading – it is a room, the kind of room you’d most likely find in a million other homes.  It shelters two straight-back couches in muted neutral hues, a color coordinated coffee table exuding Scandinavian design and a pair of macaroon-hued curtains that most likely leave the morning rays escape inside as easily as they were not there at all. Nothing original, nothing to say a thing or two about the owner’s personality, no paintings, no decorative pillows, no pictures. The typical warmth of a hotel room passes through the thick glass of the window – everything perfectly organized, but in the end, plain.

Though home deco might be seen as a tricky business, many of us preferring to embrace minimalism when it comes to furniture, nothing states we have to stay true to the boring layouts we see in the showrooms.  In fact, a few decorative pillows thrown here and there and some colourful sketches hanging on the wall could easily restore the uniqueness of a room.

My go-to source when it comes to finding home decorations to match my personality and my lifestyle is Rachel Weisberg, a young designer who promotes sustainability and successfully incorporates it into daily life. Each of her home deco products is handmade from remaining pieces of the designer’s previous collections, minimizing waste. The result? One of a kind hand-dyed patchwork pillows, duvet covers in organic cotton and dream catchers made in vintage materials that will not only serve as conversation starters but will also complement our personalities, protecting Mother Nature.
