ORGANIZING THE WARDROBE

ORGANIZING THE WARDROBE

Fall is around the corner and looking at my overstuffed closet that’s hosting all those silky dresses, strappy sandals and other appealing pieces I just couldn’t resist buying during summer – and to be honest I didn’t even try – there’s no better time to think of a wardrobe reorganization, just to make enough space for the new-season purchases I daydream of ever since the fall-winter collections first hit the catwalks. And because space is not my ally – how I dream about a big walk-in closet, where I could properly hang all my precious investments without making any discrimination – I started digging in the online area for tips and tricks on how to make the most out of a tiny closet. Finding a few useful-looking ideas, I posted them down-below, even though, to be honest, I haven’t tested them all – still hoping my wardrobe will somehow grow big overnight, just like a mushroom after the rain. Enjoy!

LET’S GET STARTED:

1. Get rid of the clothes you no longer wear! – if you didn’t wear something for more than three seasons, there are little chances you’ll fall for that thing ever again; it would be much better to use the space for something you’ll actually wear and in the same time make someone else happy by donating the stuff that doesn’t satisfy you anymore

2. Store your out-of-season items in a suitcase – When in lack of space I put my out of season items in a large suitcase and place it on the top of my closet; this way things that I am planning to recycle in the next season are well stored, leaving me enough space to properly arrange my current season stuff

3. Invest in some multi-purpose hangers – wooden hangers are the best when you want to keep your clothes in proper shape; you might also want to remove dry-cleaner bags from your clothes because they don’t allow garments to breathe and don’t allow you to take a good look at the stored items

4. Choose the items to hang and to fold – I usually hang sensitive items like tailored pants, tops, dresses and skirts, folding stuff like knitwear, denim and loungewear.

5. Organize by category, color and utilityOrganizing items by category will help you track easier all of your stuff, helping you to choose items faster and keeping you from investing in something you already have too much of – this method is my favorite, there has been more than one time when it kept me from investing in another black dress when on the hanger there were at least five looking more or less the same. Another method would be to organize your stuff by color but, except the fact it will make your closet look delightful, I personally don’t believe in its utility – there would be the risk of getting the things you need covered by other stuff in the same color, that you don’t necessarily need at the moment. The third method would be to arrange stuff by utility – casual wear, work wear, cocktail garments – could be helpful to prevent you on buying too much casual wear when in lack of work wear and so on.

6. Keep your accessories in a glass drawer – this way you will be able to see better your jewelry making accessorizing a much less complicated situation

7. Store your hosiery, socks and underwear in drawers – I like to use separate drawers for my hosiery, stocks and underwear, this way I keep them neater and more visible for when needed

8. Keep your handbags out of the dust bag – arrange your handbags on the top shelf of your closet, keeping them out of the dust bag; this way you don’t risk using the same bag over and over again, leaving all the others to rest

9. Invest in shoe racks – storing my shoes on shoe racks is kind of essential for me, this way I am able to choose easier the ones I want to wear without having mess up my entire wardrobe in order to find them

10. Keep your best stuff at sight – no one would wear something they can’t see because it usually happens to completely forget about them; that’s why it is important to place your investments in the spotlight, where you can reach them easily, helping you make the most out of them
